LittleBigPlanet PS Vita review

Since its release last year, the Playstation Vita handheld console has struggled. While the hardware is fantastic, sales have been sluggish because there haven’t been enough decent exclusive games out in the time since it was launched. LittleBigPlanet PS Vita may help change all that.

Originally out on the Playstation 3, LittleBigPlanet has always been fun. On the handheld Vita however, it really comes alive. The levels in this platformer look like they were made in a hand-craft lesson at a particularly creative infants school run by Tim Burton. The levels have a sinister edge that gives the playful tunes, colourful scenery and loveable protagonist a delightfully dark feel, while still being child friendly. You control Sackboy, a little stuffed toy who is infinitely customisable, whether you want a seventies afro and disco glasses or bunny ears and inflatable armbands. All of the Vita’s control systems are used throughout a variety of challenges, including the touchscreen, back touchpad and motion-activated accelerometer. The levels are considerably more varied than previous LBP games with flying, shooting and even levels where you pilot a bizarre three-wheeled vehicle that can stick to any surface. The main Story Mode can be undertaken as a single-player outing, but for the more sociable, you can also join up with other Vita owners, either locally or online, and take on the challenges with as many as four players at a time. If your friends don’t own a Vita you can play many of the unlockable minigames such as a version of Air Hockey and Wack-a-Mole with two people on one console. A nice touch.

Once you’ve completed the Story mode, you also have a full range of tools to make your own levels and share them online, giving the game longevity beyond its initial offering. Simply and creatively brilliant.
